Rugs with a Story
Guras Rugs is rooted in the cultural heritage and craftsmanship of the Himalayas. Our goal is not just to promote ordinary rugs, but to bring rugs that carry a story with them. Each rug is artfully designed and authentically Nepali with a deep meaning.
The name Guras itself is inspired by the Guras (Rhododendron) flower, the national flower of Nepal, that blooms in the high hills, symbolizing resilience and beauty amidst the hardships. We are dedicated to weaving together tradition with modern designs that fit into your home perfectly. Every rug is handcrafted, every pattern is chosen with intention, and every name carries a part of Nepal in it.
As the raw materials are sourced in Nepal, and the rugs are crafted from scratch by Nepali artisans, our patterns and naming are also heavily inspired by the Nepalese culture and philosophy.
Nepali Architecture
Most of our rugs draw deep inspiration from the timeless Nepalese architecture. The elements involved in the architecture are not just pretty visuals, but carry with them centuries-old stories and cultural identities of the people before us. Our design process starts with appreciating these structures and then translating their language of form and symbolism into patterns.
Aankhijhyal
One of the most iconic architectural elements in Nepal is the Aankhijhyal, which translates to “eye window” carved from wood. These can be found in the ancestral homes of people in Kathmandu, Bhaktapur, and Lalitpur. These windows are not ordinary windows but symbolize the connection between the inner and outer world of the house.
Our Aankhijhyal rug draws inspiration from the extraordinary geometric precision and symmetry of these windows. These patterns are inviting and symbolize openness in your space.
Bharyang
Bharyangs are stairs or steps in Nepali, symbolizing progress and elevation. From the stone steps that lead up to the mountain top to the narrow stairways made of wood in village homes, bharyangs represent the determination to always rise.
Our Bharyang rug takes its inspiration from patterns mimicking the bharyang. The patterns are clean and grounded, reflecting both the function and the symbolism of steps that carry people upwards towards their dreams and aspirations.
Chalchitra
Chalchitra translates to cinema or a moving picture in Nepali. It is where stories come alive, taking you along towards the destination by unfolding emotions frame by frame. Imagination becomes vivid and visible in cinema.
Much like cinema, our Chalchitra rugs try to tell stories without a single word. The frames in the cinema are the patterns and colors of our rugs. With flowing lines and repetitive patterns, these rugs provide a visual journey.
Itta
Itta, meaning brick in Nepali, is a small yet powerful element of Nepal’s architecture. These bricks are the building blocks of ancient temples and homes in and around the valley. Each brick carries a part of the earth that is baked with patience and centuries of tradition.
Our Itta rugs are not just a tribute to construction but to the resilient foundation and quiet strength of the people. The earthy tones evoke a sense of warmth and comfort in your home. Like every home is a structure made brick by brick, our rugs are woven thread by thread.

Nepal’s landscape is diverse, etched with hilly terrains, peaks, and plains. Many of our rugs draw their inspiration from Nepali words for elements of nature. Each of these names carries a deep symbolic meaning.
